Teaching vocabulary to young second- or foreign-language learners

Abstract While vocabulary knowledge is considered a foundational element for young learners of second or foreign language (L2/FL), pedagogically useful information on this topic not easily accessible practitioners. This in part due to the fact that relevant scattered across multiple fields, including first-language acquisition, child development, and education. The aim paper synthesize recent from related fields provide theoretically sound evidence-based teaching L2/FL. I identify four major recommendations instruction: (a) ensure frequent repeated exposure target words (as well as nontarget words); (b) explicit word definitions meanings context; (c) create opportunities discussions interactions around question; (d) use multimodal approaches teach vocabulary. also suggest future research directions, with goal finding effective teachers can improve their instruction while meeting specific needs L2/FL students.
